Maria Ozawa Explains Why JAV Videos Are Pixelated

Former JAV star Maria Ozawa explained to ABS-CBN why Japanese adult videos (JAV) are always pixelated. She said the censorship creates mystery and helps sell fantasy, especially to the mostly male audience. According to Ozawa, who performed in over 100 JAV scenes per IAFD, “It makes it more mysterious… We are selling those, mostly 90% male market.”

This pixelation practice stems from Article 175 of Japan’s Penal Code, a 1907 law that prohibits the distribution of “obscene” material. Japanese producers use the famous mosaic censorship as self-regulation to avoid legal issues while still releasing hardcore content.

Ozawa, who performed in over 100 JAV scenes according to IAFD, said the censored style helps viewers maintain imagination while still delivering the dream.
